Connect Torrance

Connect Torrance was a project designed to address First-Mile & Last-Mile connections with Torrance's new Mary K. Giordano Regional Transit Center.

Client Context
Located just South of Downtown Los Angeles, Torrance plays a significant role as a regional connector between Los Angeles and the rest of Southern California. In addition, many Torrance residents are also frequent commuters to Los Angeles, traveling to work and recreational events.
With an extensive existing transit network connecting Torrance to other areas in the region, Torrance Transit sought to supplement this network with a microtransit service that would provide First-Mile & Last-Mile connections to the new Mary K. Giordano regional transit center.

Project Overview
The project's deliverables included a consumer mobile app paired with a 9-vehicle microtransit service serving central Torrance. All service vehicles were hybrid-powered, in line with best sustainability practices, and the fleet consisted of Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles to ensure transit access for riders with disabilities.
Unique Factors / Challenges
A unique factor of this project was the multi-zone technical setup. The service area contains a "general public zone" and a "Connect Torrance Plus" zone that contains the former, plus an additional area west leading to Redondo Beach.
The general zone, situated entirely within the city boundary, is open to the public. The other larger zone, geared towards seniors and ADA Paratransit riders, ensures that these vulnerable populations can access the entire city and beyond with ease.

Achievements & Outcome
A white-label mobile application titled "Connect Torrance"
A brand new microtransit service offering Torrance residents a new way to travel within the city and to access the regional transit center offering service to Los Angeles and beyond.
Service of over 200 rides per day
